La Casa de Bernarda Alba as a reflection of Spain during the Francoist era

Alejandra Portolés Colás, Southern Utah University

La Casa de Bernarda Alba as a reflection of Spain during the Francoist era How does a literary work, La Casa de Bernarda Alba, reflects the costumbrist society of Spain during the period of the Spanish Civil War and the early Francoist era? The purpose of this research is to understand the society of Spain during a difficult period, the Spanish Civil War and the Francoist era throughout the play of La Casa de Bernarda Alba written by one of the most iconic Spanish dramatist, Federico García Lorca. During this period, Spain was divided into two different political spectrums; the nationalist Spain who didn’t want to open their gates to the influence of a modern Europe and a reformist Spain, positive about the future of Spain as a modern country. Lorca, in a play full of symbolism, reflects the nationalist Spanish society. This presentation will be conducted in Spanish because this is research that I am doing for my Spanish major. This research will be developed thanks to the analysis of the play La Casa de Bernarda Alba and the research of scholarly journals and research books. The research of La Casa de Bernarda Alba and its symbolism is significant because it helps understand the background of the culture and history of the Spanish society. The study of literature works from different countries help to have a better understanding of different cultures and an understanding of the reason of why many countries still struggle with social and political issues.
