Fluorescent transition metal complexes, including those with Ir, Rh, and Ru, are of great interest for OLED applications. Binuclear metal complexes have gained attention, yet many aspects remain unexplored, especially outside enzymatic contexts. The potential improvements of homobinuclear complexes over mononuclear ones are largely unexamined. Homobinuclear complexes with identical metal centers present challenges in understanding mechanisms like oxidative addition, migratory insertion, transmetallation, and reductive elimination. Advances in Ir complex synthesis offer a path to explore electron transfer mechanisms. We are synthesizing bisiridium complexes to study electron-donating and withdrawing effects, with three complexes prepared so far. The focus of this poster is the synthesis and characterization of [(Ir(dmpmpy)2)2(dpm)]Cl2, having methyl substituents on the ligands. Initial photochemical results are promising.
