Michael O. Leavitt’s life exemplifies dedication to public service, economic progress, and family. Born in 1951 in Cedar City, Utah, Leavitt grew up in a home shaped by the sacrifices of pioneering ancestors, many of whom were early converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He earned a business degree from Utah State University, where he met his wife Jacalyn Smith. Together they have five children. Leavitt began his business career with the Leavitt Group, a regional insurance company founded by his father, Dixie L. Leavitt. He later became president and CEO and led in the company’s successful expansion. In 1976, Leavitt managed his father’s bid for governor of Utah. Though unsuccessful, his early experience in managing the campaign of his father and several others led to his eventual winning of the office in 1992. Leavitt served as governor for 10 years after being reelected to office twice. Governor Leavitt’s policies for education, development of state infrastructure, and healthcare reform led to significant economic progress in the state, positioning Utah as one of the largest technology hubs in the nation. Immediately after his service as governor, Leavitt was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as head of the Environmental Protection Agency, and then as the Secretary of Health and Human Services the following year. Significant accomplishments there included leading the federal government’s pandemic preparedness and creating the framework for presidential transitions. In 2021, Secretary Leavitt was called to serve as the President of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, where he continues his legacy of dedicated leadership and service.
