Aquatic plant-associated fungi along an urbanization gradient

With increased population density, it is important to analyze the effects of urbanization on the surrounding environment and the organisms occupying it. Although the effects of urbanization on watersheds are well-studied, microbial communities are less so. Here, we utilized a watershed with increasing urbanization to examine the effects of human population, impermeable surface, and industrialization densities on the mycobiome of the aquatic plant, Ranunculus aquatilis. We used high-throughput amplicon sequencing of 16S and ITS regions to interrogate bacterial and fungal community composition. We hypothesize that increasing pollutant stress on plants will reduce microbial community diversity. Sequence data acquisition is ongoing at the time of this writing.
Architectural Contextualism: How Context Shapes Building Perception

It encompasses the information that conveys an understanding of ideas, scenes, or objects. In a world marked by increasing individualism, the consideration of contextual elements in architectural design often takes a back seat. The Royal Ontario Museum serves as a notable case study. The addition of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, contrasting with the traditional backdrop, has ignited debates regarding its compatibility with the existing context. This brings forth a critical question: How does altering the contextual surroundings impact people's perceptions?Furthermore, would the public's perceptions differ if the Crystal were the original building, with the traditional structure serving as the addition? This study delves into the role of contextual factors in shaping the architectural experience. Through a comprehensive survey featuring diverse architectural styles situated in various contexts, my aim is to discern preferences: whether individuals lean toward statement buildings or designs that naturally integrate with their surroundings. My research hypothesis suggests that people derive greater enjoyment from buildings that seamlessly integrate with their contextual environment.The implications of these findings are of significant value to architects and designers. They provide insights to facilitate informed design decisions that not only promote community cohesion but also elevate the public's appreciation of architectural structures.
Arm Modeling in Preparation for Wearable Mobility-Enhancing Elbow Brace

Our goal at BYU SMASH IT lab is to improve patient’s mobility in rehabilitative settings. For this purpose, we’re modeling the human arm to aid in our design of wearable rehabilitative sleeves. We are investigating methods for manipulating elbow flexion and extension using an assistive elbow brace, such as through cable-driven movement and the less used concept of tensegrity. The appeal of these methods is their flexibility, lightweight, and multiple degrees of freedom in movement. In the prototyping stage we’ve created a test stand resembling a human arm that we use to evaluate how our elbow brace would interact with the wearer and measure the forces between the arm and the brace. Measurements from these tests will aid in our design of a future elbow brace. Knowledge gained from this work has the potential to apply to other joints, each with their own rehabilitative and other uses.
Art Beyond the Bars: The Value of Arts Programming in Correctional Settings

Between the years of 1988 and 2016, there has been a staggering figure of individuals, in the hundreds of thousands, that have been incarcerated in what has been recognized as a mass incarceration phenomenon intended to make our nation safer using a “tough-on-crime” approach. As of 2020, the number of people incarcerated is slated to be around two million, and the prison population continues to grow. Along with this stunning growth in our carceral systems has also come the realization that without investment into incarcerated individuals, prison systems will continue to grow without serving any meaningful purpose to both incarcerated people and their communities once incarcerated individuals have served their terms. As a result, educational programming has been implemented in multiple prisons across the country, and following suit is the implementation of visual, theater, and writing-based arts programs. While the original intention of many arts education programs in carceral environments is to serve as a form of rehabilitation, therapy, and assimilation back into society for those that are incarcerated, many incarcerated or formerly-incarcerated artists perceive the arts opportunities offered to be much more valuable and fulfilling than a means of emotional regulation and personal growth; some see it as a way of connection or re-connection with their families, friends, and communities, others see it as a potential career path and redirection of the trajectory of their lives, and some see it as a reclamation of their identities and voices beyond their criminal history.
Artificial black holes: are they a threat to humanity?

We wanted to see if accidentally creating mini black holes in high energy particle collisions posed a real threat to humanity. To do this, we calculated some properties of such a black hole, such as its life span, radius, density, and minimum energy required. We found that it is unlikely to exist, let alone destroy the planet. Furthermore, we calculated what would happen if it were to exist, finding that it would move through the Earth with little resistance and with a small amount of Earth matter absorbed. Depending on initial velocity, the black either quickly escapes Earth or would settle orbiting it with the orbit part of which passes via Earth. It is interesting that in a simplified model of Earth as of a sphere of uniform density, the inner part of the orbit of black hole is also elliptical (as the outer is) but not Keplerian - with Earth center not at the focus but at the center of another ellipse. In the case of small initial velocity when entire orbit is inside Earth, the period of such inner orbit is constant regardless of birth location and initial velocity of black hole. The goal of this presentation is to discuss the results of our calculations and to explore potential applications to our understanding of interaction of mini black holes with ordinary atomic matter.
ARTshare Project

The texture, color, shapes, movement, contrast and emphasis which exists in ART will be carried into the interiors. Through this adaptive reuse project, the interior emphasis will be on the historical architecture and will draw on the textures and details as the backdrop. By tapping into these details, the overall aesthetic will ground the visitor to the experience within the space. The ARTshare Project mission is to uplift artists, gather and unite community, and empower human beings through ART. According to research (Pilegaard, 2023) “exhibitions might be said to produce an atmosphere of its own, neither is detached from the architectural interiors’ existing atmosphere. Indeed, they are dependent on it.” Atmosphere, distance and proximity in museum spaces is how we experience space. Access to light, combined with color, improves alertness and affects the soul and spirit. Combinations of color and natural light by using different types of glass throughout the design will stimulate moods and will be incorporated into this environment. Each loop in the golden thread of this project will represent an area of commercial, hospitality, healthcare and residential. Baniyamin, 2020 says, “Researchers have shown that visual stimulation of nature, natural lighting, artwork, relaxing colours and therapeutic sound can greatly accelerate the therapeutic process”. The art therapy rooms place a high priority on privacy while providing a healing environment with light, biophilia and art. Just like artists rely on nature for inspiration, so will the residential condos. With access to views, air and light, the design will connect the resident with nature. The bistro is the air that the interior breaths, inhaling and exhaling, healing and connecting.
Asexual Aviators: Transcriptome Profile of the Life Stages of a Parthenogenic Mayfly

Mayflies, also known as Ephemeroptera, are members of the anciently derived infraclass known as Paleoptera, the first group of insects that evolved the ability to fly (Gillott, 2005). Distinct developmental characteristics of the life stages of the mayfly are the reason that ephemeroptera are of particular interest. The life stages are; the egg, nymphs, subimago, and imago. The aquatic nymph stage does not have wings but instead has leaf-shaped gills that can be used to help propel the insect through its environment (Eastham, 1936). Centroptilum triangulifer will be used for RNA extractions to study the development of both wings and gills. Objectives for this research are 1). Elucidate, describe, capture, and record distinguishing characteristics of the different instars of Centroptilum triangulifer. 2) Identify key instars integral to gill and wing development in Centroptilum triangulifer. 3) Perform 10 RNA extractions. 4) Use Qubit technology to ensure ≥ 20 ng/μL RNA concentration per ≥ 10 μL. 5) samples will be packaged in thermo-stable shipping boxes and sent to Novogene where samples will be tested once more for quality control. 7) Once the quality is confirmed, samples will be processed using poly-A enrichment and then sequenced using high-throughput Illumina sequencing. Data will be tested for quality control and then sent to Ogden labs. 8). Using an in-house bioinformatics workflow, RNA data will be checked for quality, trimmed, and aligned, before RNA data is first trimmed, and then aligned to Ogden labs transcriptome reference genome. After alignment, the number of reads per gene, or hit counts, are calculated and compared. 9) RNA results of different instars will be compared to each other as well as NCBI databases using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool.
Asian Representation Within Theatre: Journey Through the Past and the Representation of the Present

Asian theatre has been a significantly ever-present force for millenniums from countries such as China, Japan, Thailand, and more. However, as modernization and globalization have come to the forefront, we have seen a decline in traditional theatrical practices. This begs the question of why these shows have seen a decline, and it also brings up the potential need for more positive representation in contemporary performance studies. This project seeks to view the historical context of Asian theatre from Noh and Peking opera to modern shows like “Miss Saigon”, “The King and I”, and “The Mikado”. Additionally, it explores the lack of Asiatic representation in our modern theatrical society. Through traditional research methods, further understanding will be gained about Asian theatrical practices such as Noh, Kabuki, Peking opera, and shadow puppetry. Most importantly the use of critical approaches such as cultural studies, feminist criticism, and historical criticism, will reveal the lack of non-stereotypical representation of Asians within modern theatre. A key portion of the research will be conducted through personal interviews with Asian Studies and Asian Theatre professors. Leo Shingchi Yip, an associate professor of Japanese studies at the University of Gettysburg, spoke about the misrepresentation of Chinese people during medieval Japan. Yip states, “The portrayals of the Chinese characters featured in these [Noh] ‘Chinese plays’ do not necessarily remain faithful to their Chinese origins. Attuning to the audience’s tastes, expectations, and knowledge was a key factor in shaping [Noh] into an artistic institution, which in turn determined the making and staging of ‘Chinese plays’ in medieval Japan.” This quote discusses how ancient Japan would adapt to the audience’s wants and wishes within their Noh performances. In present times, we do the same thing on Broadway and in local productions to best please our target demographic. If this selective representation was present during medieval Japan, then what is the expected outcome of change over time?In most cases, if something is not termed as insensitive then it likely does not change. When looking at Broadway today, a vast majority of Asian interpretation falls under stereotypes and a minority of the cast’s proportions. Additionally, the presentation of women within the theatre is severely lacking; also, most modern Asiatic heroines fall under the depressive, suicidal, and manipulative Asian women stereotype. The key goal of this presentation is to reveal the inequality and lack of positive Asian depictions in contemporary theatrics. The audience will learn about Asian historical productions as previously mentioned. This presentation forces them to look at their own biases and face the lack of representation within their own local communities as well. The audience’s understanding will blossom and see the harmful portrayals of Asians and seek to create a new hopeful future for all who want to participate in theatre. This hope provides equality for all regardless of skin color, body size, and gender identity.
Assessing Eccentric Hamstring Strength in football Players: Muscle-Specific contributions

In the dynamic game of professional football, where split-second decisions and explosive movements often determine the outcome, players train all year round for optimal athletic performance. Paramount to this performance are the hamstring muscles including the semimembranosus (SM), semitendinosus (ST), and both the long and short head of the biceps femoris (BFLH and BFSH). They play pivotal roles in sprints, agility, jumping, and overall lower-body strength. Because of the critical nature of the hamstrings during functional activity, this study sought to determine which of these three muscles contributes the most to eccentric hamstring strength. Recognizing the correlation between muscle volume and muscle strength, this study compared maximal eccentric hamstring strength with the proportion of each isolated hamstring muscle's volume relative to the total hamstring muscle group volume. Doing so would identify which specific muscle contributes the most to eccentric hamstring strength. This study incorporated 74 male, collegiate football players representing all positions on the team. Maximal strength was assessed through Nordic hamstring curls and overall muscle volume was quantified using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our results show no correlation (R^2<0.2) between maximal force output and proportional muscle volume for the ST, and the BFSH. Additionally, the correlations for these muscles were not statistically significant (P>0.05). The SM muscles had a weak negative correlation (R^2= -0.25) with eccentric hamstring strength that was statistically significant (P = 0.03). The BFLH proportional volume was positively weakly correlated (R^2= 0.22) with eccentric hamstring strength. This correlation was statistically non-significant (P = 0.06). This information shows that no hamstring muscle contributes more to eccentric hamstring strength than any other. Knowledge of this can be invaluable for clinicians and researchers to design comprehensive strength training programs that enhance the collective strength of the entire hamstring muscle group, ultimately optimizing the performance of football players.
Assessing Genomic Diversity Via whole genome resequencing in bean cultivars (Phaseolus L. spp.) from Brazil, a putative secondary center of diversity.

Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) and P. lunatus (lima bean) provide protein and nutrition for millions of people across the globe. Native to the New World, these cultivated species present unique histories of multiple and independent domestications in Mesoamerica and the Andes. Brazil is the leading producer globally of these beans. With both wild and cultivated landraces present, Brazil may act as a secondary center of domestication for these two economically significant leguminous crops. Brazil's indigenous populations’ cultivation efforts may include both wild and cultivated germplasm, potentially contributing to the continued domestication of these crops to create novel shapes, sizes, and colors that are grown and hand-selected by the natives in these regions. To investigate Brazil as a secondary domestication center of beans, this research addresses several key questions: Are signals of past and current domestication processes discernible in current Brazilian cultivars of these species? Can we unravel the relationships between these Brazilian crops and their primary centers of domestication? What genetic differences are underpinning domestication? How diverse are Brazilian cultivars? How do they relate to wild and related material and species? This work focuses on 48 accessions of P. lunatus and P. vulgaris from Brazil, including wild material and two accessions from two related species, P. polystachios and P. filiformis from North America. Whole genomes were resequenced using Illumina sequencing and compared against the published genome of Phaseolus vulgaris to identify SNPs in each accession. Whole chloroplast genomes were also assembled and compared. Phylogenetic analyses, network analyses, population structure, and tests for neutral and positively selected mutations were conducted, revealing distinct clades for both P. vulgaris and P. lunatus with clear links to their Andean and Mesoamerican origins. Genetic diversity was assessed both within (cultivated vs wild) and between P. vulgaris and P. lunatus, demonstrating significant variations, not only between species but also within each species, suggesting the influence of diverse selection pressures and local adaptation during the domestication process. McDonald-Kreitman tests analyze and locate possible domestication genes from the library of SNP’s between outgroups (Phaseolus filiformis and Phaseolus polystachios) and between species. Overall, this research advances our understanding of the intricate process of domestication in P. vulgaris and P. lunatus, highlighting potential ongoing domestication in Brazilian cultivars, unraveling their genetic relationships, and shedding light on the complex interplay of genes that underpin domestication and diversity. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of crop evolution and have practical implications for crop improvement and conservation.
Assessing Plant Adaptability to Wildfire Impact and Drought

This is important because with rising temperatures and droughts there is an increase of wildfires (Diffenbaugh et al., 2015). This question will be address by comparing drought physiological traits of a native tree species, Utah juniper, in burned versus unburned sites in central Utah. The goal of the project is to determine whether plants that survive wildfires are more or less drought resilient. This research may provide insight into whether various tree species are better adapted to survive droughts and wildfires which will help in future ecology predictions of the future landscapes.There are multiple factors in why forests respond differently to drought. The factors include elevation, prior exposure to fire, prior exposure to drought, clade, and species (Anderegg et al., 2020). Severe drought or heat from a fire can result in hydraulic failure (McDowell et al., 2008). This means that the plant has loses its ability to sufficiently move water from the roots to the leaves. Which could indicate that trees burned in wildfires will not be better adapted to summer drought. Whereas there is a possibility that if the tree has had sufficient amount of time to recover from a stressing event that it could be better adapted for future droughts (Anderegg et al, 2020). My project will focus specifically on the effects of prior exposure to fire on Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) drought acclimation ability.
Assessing Risk Authoritarian Parenting and Adult Coping

Early experiences in the home have long-term effects on health and well-being. This study will examine the connections between parenting styles and coping mechanisms, shedding light on their implications for child development and adult mental health and well-being. Parenting styles looked at in this study, specifically authoritarian has varied views on expectations, discipline, and rewards (Doepke & Zilibotti, 2017). Parenting styles have been shown to impact how children express themselves, and more specifically their expression of anger (Radomir-Beliţoiu, 2019). The expression of anger may indicate a deficiency in healthy coping skills. When individuals are found without healthy ways of coping, they become increasingly vulnerable to mental health disorders and poor relationship satisfaction. Based on our current understanding we believe that an authoritarian parenting style will be positively correlated with unhealthy coping mechanisms such as avoidance, substance use, and self-criticism. Adult participants (N = 100) varying in ethnicity and age will be recruited to complete the Brief Cope Questionnaire (Carver, 1997) and an adaptive version of the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ; Robinson, Mandleco, Olsen, & Hart, 2001) to assess their parent's style of parenting and their ability to cope with challenges. We will run an ANOVA on the collected data using SPSS. We expect to see a correlation between parenting styles and children’s coping skills. It is anticipated that there will be a strong positive correlation in unhealthy coping skills and parental strategies. This study may suggest the importance of educating children and young adults in healthier coping skills and adults in healthy parenting strategies. This education may aid in reducing the frequency and intensity of mental health crisis in adults.
Assessment of the Use of Phragmites australis as a Biomarker for Trace Metal Pollution

Utah Lake is the third-largest freshwater body west of the Mississippi River and serves as a vital resource for just over 600,000 Utah Valley residents through agriculture, residential and recreational purposes. In addition to its utility, Utah Lake provides a haven for biodiversity for numerous species within its wetlands. Despite its utility and importance, the lake faces two significant challenges in the form of Trace Metal (TM) pollution and the encroachment of invasive plant species known as Phragmites australis (P. australis). Despite considerable investments of time, money, and resources by various state agencies to address these concerns, their success has been limited due to the agency’s isolated efforts for these large multifaceted issues. TM, though naturally occurring in the environment, has been found to be toxic to both people and the ecosystem when at elevated levels. P. australis, is a robust and fast-growing macrophyte, possessing remarkable adaptability to and tolerance for poor soils, enabling it to rapidly outcompete native species. Due to P. australis resilience and aggressive nature, many colonies have grown around the lake regardless of soil conditions. Studies have shown that P. australis has been utilized for remediation purposes around water bodies by extracting TMs from sediment. While P. australis must be addressed, can it be used as part of the solution by identifying TM polluted areas? This study aims to discern the variety in TM absorption by P. australis in both unpolluted and polluted sites in the wetlands surrounding the hyper-eutrophic Utah Lake. We selected nine sites around Utah Lake, considering their land use and proximity to pollution sources. At each site, three replicate samples encompassing P. australis, soil, and water were collected. These samples underwent a meticulous process, including washing, weighing, grounding, sieving, acid digesting using a CEM MARS 6, and analysis for TM content within an ICP-MS. Our preliminary findings reveal that in both unpolluted and polluted sites, soil concentrations of As and Cd exceeded background levels (11.73, 1.53 in unpolluted sites, and 27.47, 6.63 in polluted sites, respectively). Notably, in select polluted sites, such as UVU, P. australis displayed a remarkable capacity to hyper-accumulate As, with a transfer factor of 167.14% compared to the lowest unpolluted sites, like Lindon, which showed a rate of about 10%. Across all sites, the accumulation of Cr was relatively consistent (ranging from 17.13 to 19.7 ppm), irrespective of biomass. The examination of TM concentrations, transfer factor rates, and TM accumulation based on biomass suggests that P. australis may serve as a valuable biomarker for identifying TM-polluted sites. This research holds significant relevance, as it could offer state agencies a swift and effective means to pinpoint TM-polluted areas. Moreover, the areas where P. australis is thriving may be leveraged for phytoremediation efforts in TM-contaminated sites, providing an environmentally friendly solution to address this pressing concern.

The genes are expressed in the prostate gland. Both genes have several polymorphisms. Here we examine the association of rs4648298 (A-G transition) and rs20417 (G-C transversion) polymorphisms and prostatic diseases. This research was approved by the Utah Valley University IRB.Materials and Methods: DNA was extracted from a blood sample of 56 healthy volunteers, 51 volunteers with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), and 61 volunteers with clinical prostate cancer (PCa). Genotyping was conducted through PCR-RFLP analyses. The restriction enzymes used were BaeGI (for rs4648298) and AciI (rs20417), respectively. Alleles with the restriction site were considered recessive. The association was inferred through statistical analyses of the distribution of the genotypes (BB, Bb, and bb or AA, Aa and aa), and allele frequencies among the controls and the affected groups. A p-value of ≤0.05 was considered significant.Results: The distribution of the genotypes is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for all three groups. The b allele of the COX-1 gene is extremely rare (less than 3%), and no significant association between the B or b allele or BB, Bb, and bb genotypes and prostatic disease was observed. The a allele of the COX-2 gene is more common in the BPH group (p=0.011), but not the PCa group (p= 0.472) or the combined affected group (p=0.068) compared to the control group.Conclusions: There is no association between the rs4648298 polymorphisms of the COX-1 gene and prostatic diseases. The a allele of the rs20417 polymorphisms of the COX-2 gene is associated with higher risks of BPH and possibly PCa. The small sample size, sampling from one ethnic group, and the low distribution of the b allele in the Lebanese population are limitations of this study.
Atmospheric Modeling of Brown Dwarfs With PICASO, SONORA, and JWST

We present theoretical model fits to the spectra of two complex cloudy L-type brown dwarfs, VHS 1256b (L8) and J0624 (L5). Using the James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST) Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), we get the complete spectra from 0.6-28 microns. We first fit the data using two forward model grids from the Sonora group to estimate the temperature and cloud properties of our object. Then, we apply a modified retrieval fitting code called PICASO, to make more complex fits to our observations. We conclude that forward models struggle to accurately fit our objects, while PICASO’s complex modeling can help us better understand what physics and chemistry could be lacking from our forward models.
ATP and Dopamine Co-Release in the NAc

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is a major component of the reward pathway in the brain. The role of ATP as a neurotransmitter within the NAc has largely remained unstudied. Multiple experiments have hinted at larger roles ATP may have in other areas of the brain, but not yet in the NAc to our knowledge. Our goal was to characterize ATP release in the NAc, in an attempt to pave the way to finding novel methods for treating/preventing addiction. Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) was used to track ATP and dopamine release in the NAc of mouse brains, evoked with electrical stimulations before and after application of various drugs. Blocking nAChR’s and NaV channels reduced both ATP and dopamine release. Blocking DAT’s enhanced release, but blocked clearance of both ATP and dopamine, and activating the immune system with LPS increased release of both ATP and dopamine. Changes in dopamine and ATP release after drug application were definitely correlated, but not proportionally so. While in some instances, the same mechanisms previously thought to work just with one neurotransmitter or the other had effects on both, changes in ATP signaling cannot be fully explained by dopaminergic machinery in the NAc.
Attitudes Regarding Gender and Sexuality Scale

The examination of attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community presents a newly found psychological concept that plays an important role in fostering social inclusion, reducing discrimination, and promoting a more accepting society. The purpose of our study is to create a measure that will assess a person's general attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community. In the current social and political climate of the US, there are a multitude of differing thoughts, opinions, and feelings regarding the community- some that are positive, and some that are negative. Current and past research generally only focus on sexuality, requiring the need for a scale that includes all members of the LGBTQ+ community. Such past works include Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gays Scale (Herek 1988) as well as the Index of Attitudes Toward Homosexuals (Hudson & Ricketts 1980). The Attitudes regarding Gender and Sexuality Scale (AGSS) was created to provide a single scale that will measure a variety of attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community. The AGSS covers fear, understanding, and tolerance- related aspects of these attitudes. Before releasing the scale to the general public, the scale was given to five subjects to assess for face validity. Participants will be recruited from MTurk and social media, and will be asked to respond to 21 questions that envelop the above aspects of attitudes. The participants will answer the “Gender/Sex Diversity Scale'' (Sudson, 2022) alongside AGSS to test for construct validity. The participants will also be asked to answer two scales that are measuring different constructs to test for discriminant validity. Once all of the data has been collected a confirmatory factor analysis will be ran. To test for reliability, we will be using the internal consistency method. For this we will be testing for Cronbach’s coefficient alpha since our scale using a 7-point Likert scale. We hypothesize that AGSS will be able to measure both negative and positive attitudes that are directed towards the LGBTQ+ community. With these results further research could be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-discrimination laws, the reasoning behind these attitudes, and how the attitudes affect the wellbeing of the LGBTQ+ community.
Autism Friendly Healthcare: Improving Patient Care for Individuals with Autism through an Evidence-Based Educational Video

Background: In the United States, an estimated 1 in 36 children has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While public knowledge of people with ASD has been increasing, many areas of society still need to improve to accommodate people with ASD. People with ASD have high healthcare utilization rates but often experience challenges receiving adequate care, leading to gaps in patient care, increased emergency room visits, and hospital admissions. Adjustments to primary care for patients with ASD are essential to decreasing these concerning trends. Thus, ambulatory care providers have a key role in these improvements. This project will, therefore, focus on improving the self-efficacy of ambulatory care nurse practitioners in the state of Utah in caring for patients with ASD. The purpose of this project is to develop an evidence-based educational video on how to identify and make accommodations to facilitate the care of patients with ASD and evaluate the effectiveness of the video.Methods: The project team includes graduate student Emily Santillan, faculty chair Dr. Katreena Merrill, committee members Dr. Terisa Gabrielson and Dr. Petr Ruda, and undergraduate student Gabby Sutton. The team consulted together and developed an evidence-based script for an educational video. Based on the script and working with the team, the video will be produced by BYU Media Services. Once the video is produced, the team will embed it into a Qualtrics survey that includes pre- and post-intervention surveys. The pre-survey will include basic demographic questions and the “AASPIRE Adult Autism Provider Self-Efficacy Scale” to measure provider self-efficacy in caring for patients with Autism. The post-survey will include the same self-efficacy scale to measure any changes, as well as feedback questions on the video itself. The results and feedback will be used in a future project to disseminate the video further.Results: This project is still in process, and no results have been obtained.Implications for Nursing: Nurses in every specialty will encounter Autistic patients. Being familiar with strategies to improve their nurse-patient interactions will help nurses deliver excellent care to potentially vulnerable patients.Conclusion: While the project has not been completed, we plan on using the results to improve the educational video and pursue more widespread implementation.
