AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OR PROJECT OF Mikhail D. Jones for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Healthcare Administration presented May, 2022 Title: The Prevalence of Betel Nut and Tobacco Use Among Micronesian Immigrants in the United States Chair: Dr. James Bemel, PhD Abstract Body: Betel nut is a carcinogenic substance that is one of the most consumed addictive substances in the world. It is commonly consumed with tobacco. Micronesia is one of the largest consumers of betel nut globally. Immigrants to the United States from Micronesia are a rapidly growing population, but no previous data has been collected on the prevalence of betel nut and tobacco use among that population. A survey regarding personal betel nut usage, tobacco usage, knowledge of the health effects of consuming such products, current health status, and access to oral healthcare was distributed via Facebook to Micronesian immigrants living in the United States. The data indicates a present public health crisis with an alarming number of Micronesian immigrants reported the regular use of betel nut and tobacco. Policy changes and further research are needed to assess and address this current public health issue. Key Words: Betel nut, tobacco, Micronesia, oral health, public health Corresponding e-mail address: jonesmikhaild@gmail.com ©Copyright by Mikhail D. Jones April 29, 2021 All Rights Reserved
