Nursing shortage is a problem facing the healthcare industry today. There are many factors that contribute to this shortage. A study has shown that just more than 15% of licensed nurses are not employed in nursing and another survey showed that 31% of nurses surveyed plan to leave the profession in 1-3 years (AMN Healthcare, 2012). This high nurse turnover rate is related to an unfavorable and declining work environment (Hetzel-Riggin, 2019). Unfavorable work environments can then lead to burnout. In asurvey of more than 50,000 registered nurses (RN) from June 5 to October 1, 2020, 9.1% of nurses left their current position and of those,31.5% reported leaving due to burnout (Shah et al., 2021). A major complication nurses are facing today that may lead to burnout is COVID-19.This dilemma is relevant today and could lead to problems for quality of care, the quality ofthework environment, andthesafety of patients as we continue to need nursing care during and after COVID-19. The purpose of this research is to explore current problems nurses arefacing today. This researchwillhelp us see what reasons might be contributing to nurses leaving or wanting to leave the hospital bedside.
