Throughout North America, minorities including English language learners in elementary schools are rising, and likewise is the awareness of current institutional racism and exclusion. In a qualitative study, I interviewed Rosa, an immigrant to Canada from Brazil, about her and her children’s experience with their school and community. Notably, they are outliers to the typical harsh effects of issues of power and exclusion. Throughout my segment of the conference, I will highlight how translanguaging and strong school-community partnerships have resulted in Rosa and her children have had a more inclusive experience, while also highlighting the ever-present occurrences of exclusion that happen to English Language learners within their communities.
