Brigham Young University’s English Program is restructuring their major, and because of this, they are creating a new introductory course. The original course, ENGL 251, focused on theoretical frameworks for analysis, while the new ENGL 203 wants to teach analysis at the forefront, with literary frameworks as tools for better literary understanding. This paper looks at the history of the introductory course, the opinions of members of the staff, and scholarly research to advise how best to teach introductory literary analysis courses to undergraduates.
