DNA barcoding of Vietnamese Mayflies

Ephemeroptera diversity in Vietnam is not well known. There have been recent studies showing some of the morphological diversity for Ephemeroptera in Vietnam (Nguyen et al. 2015). However, there is currently no DNA data for Ephemeroptera from Vietnam in the Barcoding Of Life Database (BOLD). The purpose of this project is to add the DNA sequences from Vietnamese Ephemeroptera to BOLD. In June 2016 and July 2018, Dr. T. Heath Ogden carried out collection trips to Vietnam. This collection trip yielded a large diversity of mayflies, supporting the claim that mayfly diversity increases between May and October (Hoang et al. 2011). Specimens were collected from 5 national parks and national preserves (listed below). The COI (Cytochrome Oxidase I) gene will be sequenced for 15 species of the collected mayflies. The data will be used to identify the mayflies using a bioinformatic pipeline that has been developed in the lab.
