Air travel is an important part of modern society and the global economy. Advancements in efficiency are keyto continue making air travel more accessible and affordable. There are many aspects of wing design for aircraft, such as aerodynamic and structural considerations. These considerations often conflict, which requires optimization to find the best possible solutions when evaluating all aspects. My research is focused on using computational tools developed in the FLOW Lab at BYU to model wing dynamics and apply a gradient-based optimization method to model a wing shape that is optimized for a given set of conditions. My hope is to better understand how aerodynamic and structural considerations affect optimal wing shape and how to balance these aspects in a wing design.
